In 1992 Jakob Elvstrøm bought a second hand LP “Pretty Things” by the american saxophonist Lou Donaldson and he was immidiately drawn into his funky universe of riff based jazz with a funky twist. His new band “Jakob Elvstrøm Quartet” was the result.
The band played for 10 years and often visited the Danish venue “Copenhagen Jazzhouse” which was run by by the same people who had been the musical directors of legendary “Montmartre” in Copenhagen.
After 2 cd’s and a lot of concerts the band had a pretty long break from 2006-2023.
All the menbers was active and Jakob Elvstrøm played with danish hammond ace Kjeld Lauritsen and in 2012 had the pleasure of recording with his long time idol Lou Donaldson himself! Hear the song on Jakob Elvstrøms album “Play It Back”.
In 2023 the original quartet was assembled again for an amazing reunion at the Danish “Grim Festival”.
In 2024 a new EP “Letter to Lou” was recorded with a variety of songs that would have made Sweet Poppa Lou (aka Lou Donaldson) proud of his protege!
The core of the repertoire is still the funky songs made famous by Lou Donaldson in the 1960ies mixed with Jakob Elvstrøm’s own tunes.
If you like British “James Taylor Quartet” or the Norwegian “The Real Thing”, you will immediately dig the energy and music of “Jakob Elvstrøm Quartet”. Jazz music made fun and danceable!
